A little cultural Infusion: Confucius Institute Day Celebrations in Jamaica

As far as cultures go, the Chinese culture is colourful as it is interesting. Admittedly, much of this culture has been experienced through my toddler’s eyes via the many episodes of Nai Hao Kai-Lan that she often pulls me on the couch to view with her. But even from those, I have learnt a lot about very many Chinese customs and celebrations.

I am muy excited then to discover that the Confucius Institute at the UWI Mona Campus will be staging Confucius Institute Day 2014 on September 27. Confucius Institute Day  being a day to celebrate the birth of Confucius;  the 10 year anniversary of Confucius Institutes globally and to encourage cultural exchange while highlighting the services of the Confucius Institute that teaches mandarin, calligraphy, tai chi and offers translating services.

Confucius Institute Day Event

Fortunately for us mommies who want to expose our kids to another culture, the Confucius Institute Day event will be FREE and will include a wide variety of activities for adults and kids alike, namely:

  • Mini mandarin lessons
  •  Chinese cooking classes
  •  Chinese dance and Taiji demonstration
  •  Kung Fu classes and
  •  a big karaoke session.

The event will be hosted outside the grounds of Philip Sherlock UWI from 10am – 5pm

Confucius Institute Day Photo Competition

To celebrate Confucius Institute Day , the Institute has also kicked off a Photo competition on September 15 under the theme “Show me your China”.

High school students are encouraged to submit original pictures showcasing varied aspects of “China in Jamaica” for a chance to win J$20, 000!!! Entries can be emailed to confuciusuwi@gmail.com.

For more information on the competition and the Confucius Institute Day  celebrations in Jamaica, be sure to connect with Confucius Institute on Facebook.

Also remember, the Confucius Institute offers mandarin and Tai Chi lessons to students of the University of the West Indies and the wider community. The Institute also extends its impact by offering top students scholarships to study in China.  So now if your children ever want to go on to get a full Chinese cultural exposure, here’s an avenue.  Have a peek too at a story of one such student who accessed a scholarship via the Confucius Institute in Jamaica

So do you or your kids want to know more about the Chinese Culture?

Why not pop on by the Confucius Institute Day  celebrations on September 27?!!

See you then!

Cheers!
